As we begin the Year of Mercy we recall that the mercies of the Lord was a favourite theme of St Teresa.
“I often marvelled to think of the great goodness of God, and my soul delighted in seeing His amazing magnificence and mercy”. She used to refer to the Book of her Life as “The Book of the Mercies of the Lord”.
Her daughter, St Therese of Lisieux, in an age that was preoccupied with the thought of Divine Justice, offered herself as “a victim of Merciful Love”.
We unite our prayer with that of Pope Francis, that this year may see an outpouring of mercy, given and received: “First, to fully welcome God and His merciful grace into our life; second, to become in our own times ‘workers of mercy’ “.
