Our Foundation Day

September 29th. Our Foundation Day.

One hundred and forty two years ago today our foundation was established by a little group of seven nuns, who had made the rough Channel crossing from France, leaving their beloved Paris Carmel to bring the spirit of St Teresa to England. In 1878 the Catholic church in England was just emerging from the “penal times” that followed the long years of persecution, beginning to re-organise itself, with a newly re-established hierarchy. It as hoped that this new house of prayer would help to return the country to its ancient faith, and it was especially with this in view that the foundation had been requested.
As we make a special procession around the monastery today, blessing the various rooms as on the opening day, remembering the sacrifice and heroism  of those who went before us, we dedicate ourselves anew to the building up of the Church in this country through a life of prayer.
