Easter Joy with St John of the Cross
The Cross leads to Resurrection as surely as the darkness of night gives way to the light of the rising sun. This was the faith by which St John of the Cross lived and it was the core of all his teaching. To live in the light of the Risen One is to have passed from death to life. “If we have died with him, we shall also live with him”. Through our Lenten self-denial we chose to enter, in however small a way, into that dying to earthly things and physical comforts that must be an integral part of our ongoing faith journey. It is the cost of discipleship and it brings us ultimate joy because it allows the truth of God to fill and satisfy us. Only the glory of the Risen Lord can answer the deepest desires of our soul.
“He took on our human nature and elevated it in the beauty of God, and consequently all creatures, since in human nature he was united with them all. The Son of God proclaimed, “If I be lifted up from the earth, I will elevate all things to myself.” In this elevation of all things through the Incarnation of his Son and through the glory of his resurrection according to the flesh not only did the Father beautify creatures partially, but, we can say, he clothed them entirely in beauty and dignity.”
