Monday of Holy Week
Today’s Gospel (John 12:1-11) tells us that Mary of Bethany, “six days before the Passover” anointed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume. The complaint of Judas, “Why this waste?” has often been levelled at those who follow a vocation to religious life, when others think they could be doing something more profitable. But Jesus himself comes to the defence of those who, in any walk of life, give him their heart’s love. Because it is from love of him that love for our neighbour will flow most freely, whether it is expressed in active service or in prayerful intercession.
