15 Jul July 16th Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
This day, which is celebrated as a memoria in the universal Church, is of course, a solemnity in Carmel. The first hermits who settled on Mount Carmel in the 13th century built a little Oratory and dedicated it to Our Lady. They were living in Our Lady’s homeland, not far from Nazareth itself, and before long they were calling themselves Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, suggesting a warmth of relationship with Mary that has continued to mark our Order down the ages. In time, the white cloak of the Carmelite was considered to symbolise the purity of Mary and, before the traditions surrounding the scapular became popular, it was the “mantle of Mary” that was given to people who wished to be associated with the life and spirituality of Carmel.
All visitors to our website and those who have asked our prayer will be remembered today during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
