18 Nov HOLY SOULS -Day 16
Sr. Mary of the Immaculate Conception – Veronica Mary Isabel Stewart was born on 1 October 1872. She came from a large and gifted family. Two of her brothers became priests: Father Bob Stewart SJ, a familiar figure at the jesuit community in Farm Street, Mayfair, and Dom Benedict Stewart OSB, who entered at Fort Augustus, but later moved to Farnborough Abbey. Vera was already 44 when she entered Carmel in 1916. She was a gifted artist and also skilled at carpentry and woodwork, both talents being put to good use in Carmel. She lived her vocation with great enthusiasm, and possibly with somewhat more originality than most, leaving a legacy of humorous stories. She remained very active and agile until the last few years of her life and only spent the last three months needing care in the infirmary. Her Benedictine brother, Dom Benedict, officiated at her funeral in February 1958.
