Lead Thou Me On – Week 2

Week 2
The Following of Christ

All the aspects of the holiness of life we reflected on last week can be summed up in the following of Christ.
Every person, whether married, single, priest or religious is called to be Christ’s disciple.

It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit and be my disciples.
John 15:8

Reflection
A serious following of Christ will involve:

  • Following the teachings of Jesus If you love me you will keep my commandments. John 14:15

  • Following the example of Jesus Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. Matt. 11:28

  • Witnessing to Jesus As the Father sent me, so am I sending you. John. 20:2

  • Loving others as Jesus did It is by your love for one another that everyone will recognise you as my disciples. John 13:35

It is through the Church that we are formed to discipleship, and our specific vocation in the Church flows from our relationship with Jesus.

Questions

  • Who is Jesus for me?  How do I relate to him? e.g. as Friend? Beloved? Teacher? Lord? ….

  • What are the things that have drawn me closer to Jesus and helped me know Him more? e.g. spending time in Adoration? attending religious events? good reading? the influence of good companions? ….

  • What are the temptations/weaknesses that are likely to draw me away from Jesus? e.g. concern for the opinions of others? preoccupation with material things? wrong influences on social media? ….

  • How do I participate in the life of the Church? In which ministries or service?

  • What is my prayer life like?  Regular? Inconsistent? Non-existent?

  • What place does scripture have in my life?

  • What might I do to know Jesus more, grow closer to Him, and unite my will and desire with His?

Lectio
Mark 8: 34-38

To Do
If you do not already attend daily Mass try to do so as often as you can and avail yourself regularly of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
If you are not already involved in some parish ministry or in volunteer work, explore those possibilities.

Prayer
Dearest Jesus teach me to be generous; Teach me to love and serve you as you deserve,
To give and not to count the cost, To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest To labor and to look for no reward,
Except that of knowing that I do your Holy Will. Amen.
