Mary is the patroness of
the Carmelite Order. She is our model as a person totally
given to God, listening attentively to his Word, pondering
it in her heart, and responding fully to its demands. She
is a woman of faith and obedience to whom we look as a companion
and guide on our journey of faith. She is Mother and Sister
as well as patroness. Her gentle presence pervades our lives.
The scapular that we wear is the symbol of our dedication
to her and of her motherly care for us. Our community has
its own specially loved image of Mary, the drawing popularly
known as 'our Lady of Notting Hill'.
Mother Mary of Jesus, Prioress for many years, had a deep
love of our Lady, which reached a new level in 1916. It
was during the First World War, and she herself was ill
and in great need, when she experienced our Lady's help
in so powerful and graphic a way that she afterwards sketched
her face in pencil. Cardinal Bourne, who had already shared
with her his own trust in Mary to protect our war-threatened
country, authorised the publication of this picture, to
be invoked under the title of "The Sorrowful and Immaculate
Heart of Mary". Copies of this picture have found their
way round the world, and it has now been reproduced in a
stone relief, as the lady altar in the chapel of this monastery.
