13 Dec December 14th. Solemnity of St John of the Cross

In the middle of Advent, Carmel celebrates the solemnity of St John of the Cross, a well-known teacher of the ways of prayer. It seems appropriate, in these darkening days of mid-winter, to recall that St John considers that God guides us to Himself more surely in darkness, when we have to walk in faith and trust and not by the light of our own reason. Much of his teaching is found in his commentary on his own poem: The Dark Night.
One dark night,
fired with love’s urgent longings
– ah, the sheer grace! –
I went out unseen,
my house being now all stilled
O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn!
O night that has united
the Lover with his beloved,
transforming the beloved in her Lover.
